Architecture Firm of the Year

Bond Bryan Architects were delighted to be awarded “Architects’ Practice of the Year” at last night’s Yorkshire Property Industry Awards. Yorkshire Business Insider recognised the wide range of major high quality projects that have been completed over the last year throughout the region.

On receiving the Award, John Lee, Director, said
“This is a great accolade for us all.  We have a fabulous team of people and they are all thoroughly ‘chuffed’ that their hard work and expertise has been recognised with this award. The region is blessed with some very high calibre practices and to be selected ‘practice of the year’ against very strong competition is doubly gratifying.  The quality of our portfolio is a direct result of the work our teams put in and, above all, the support of our major clients who repeatedly entrust us with challenging and exciting opportunities.  The Insider Awards are a great way of benchmarking performance against our peers, and of course the Awards Dinner is a brilliant night out for catching up with friends and colleagues across the property industry.”

Dig Deep for Tough Mudders

On a drizzly and overcast morning in Skipton, a motley crew of Architects and Technicians put themselves through what’s understood to be the toughest endurance event in the country: the ‘Tough Mudder’.

There was certainly a lot of the stuff (mud) along with many other leg trembling obstacles ranging from ’the Arctic Enema’ which entailed being plunged head first into an ice bath at the start of the course, to crawling through closely confined tunnels neck deep in, yes you guessed it, mud.

Not known for their sympathy, the organisers erected electrically charged swinging cables at the finish.  Despite everything that was thrown at them, the whole team succeeded in finishing the course and so far have managed to raise an impressive £1,435 for our nominated charity, MacMillan.  We extend a big thank you to everyone who sponsored the foolhardy team.

Sixth Form Centre gets Go-ahead

Tonbridge Grammar School has been awarded planning permission for it’s new, Bond Bryan designed, Sixth Form Study Centre.

The International Baccalaureate will be delivered within the new facility and this curriculum encourages inter-disciplinary thinking. In response to the IB’s flexible space requirements, we have designed the ‘I-barn’ to provide the ultimate space for this activity.

With a budget of only £1500/m2 and a six-month construction programme, our challenge has been to work very closely with suppliers to develop a solution that can be pre-fabricated off site.

Bond Bryan Architects worked with AA Projects to secure £2.4m worth of funding from the Academies Capital Maintenance Fund. This also covers the cost of refurbishing space, liberated by the sixth form move, for Art and Music studies.

RACE Centre for Fusion Energy Planning Application Lodged

The UK Atomic Energy Authority has lodged a planning application for a specialist research centre, designed by Bond Bryan, at its Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) site in Oxford.

Bond Bryan has been working closely with the Authority for the last two months to design a unique research centre, enabling industry and academia to gain expertise in remote and autonomous handling techniques and opening up access to a multi-billion pounds worldwide market.

Bond Bryan Director Darren Southgate said, “We have thoroughly enjoyed putting this facility together with key members of the CCFE team; the abundance and variation of expertise in the UK is amazing!”

At the recent Global Manufacturing Festival hosted in the UK, Vince Cable stated that his government department wanted to leave a legacy of cross party agreement around how the UK will sustain its engineering revival through a business bank, new skills centres and research based activity, transforming blue sky thinking into commercial opportunities.    The Culham Centre facility is part of this strategy.
