A landmark co-living development redefining urban living in Birmingham

This ambitious retrofit and extension of a significant six-storey building represents a key milestone as Birmingham’s earliest foray into the burgeoning co-living sector. Designed with young professionals in mind, Richmond House will offer 211 residential units, thoughtfully integrating spacious accommodation with an array of shared amenities and social spaces. With planning approval recently secured, we are set to embark on this innovative journey, delivering RIBA stages 1 to 6.

Value

By partnering with Bond Bryan, The James has taken a strategic step into the co-living market, which is increasingly attractive to young professionals seeking convenience, community, and connectivity. Our design focuses on maximising the potential of the existing structure while enhancing its appeal through modern amenities and communal areas.

Key features, such as spacious lounges for social gatherings and outdoor terraces, will create inviting spaces for residents to engage and connect. By placing a strong emphasis on community-centric design, we aim to ensure that Richmond House not only meets current housing demands but also cultivates a lasting sense of belonging for its residents.

This development sets a benchmark for future co-living projects, demonstrating how thoughtful design can enhance urban living while prioritising sustainability and social connectivity.
Impact

As part of Birmingham’s regeneration efforts, this development will enhance the urban landscape, drawing in young professionals who contribute to the local economy and social fabric. With its strategic location just a stone’s throw from the city centre, residents will benefit from easy access to public transport, local amenities, and cultural attractions.

The shared facilities, including co-working spaces, a gym, a cinema room, and even a podcasting studio, are designed to foster collaboration and creativity among residents, creating a vibrant community hub. The project aligns with Birmingham’s broader ambitions to revitalise the city and cater to the needs of a modern, dynamic workforce.

Sustainability

By retrofitting and extending an existing building, we are reducing the environmental impact typically associated with new constructions. This approach not only preserves the architectural character of the area but also contributes to a more sustainable urban environment by minimising waste and maximising resource efficiency.

The design incorporates energy efficient systems and materials, ensuring a lower carbon footprint while enhancing comfort for residents. Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond the building itself, promoting a lifestyle that values community, collaboration, and environmental responsibility.

Richmond House will set a benchmark for future developments in Birmingham, demonstrating how co-living can align with sustainable practices.

As we continue to strengthen our partnerships with innovative developers like The James, we remain dedicated to creating spaces that not only meet the demands of today’s residents but also enrich the community and contribute to a more sustainable urban environment. We look forward to bringing this transformative vision to life, paving the way for a new chapter in Birmingham’s architectural and social landscape.
