Bond Bryan Goes Digital

Bond Bryan has launched a new service: Bond Bryan Digital.

Bond Bryan Digital has been founded on the same principle to those of our design services: that time spent talking to us is time invested in your future.

Bond Bryan Digital will provide consultancy services to the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry and its clients, sharing our expertise built up over many years and guiding others on their journey to a digitally integrated future. The team aims to manage and deliver digital information and help achieve a step change in the quality of outcomes in construction and the on-going management of built assets (the “BIM” process). This requires sharing information in an open format capable of use by a variety of bespoke digital tools; as a result our approach is built around recognised national and international standards.

The term BIM (Building Information Modelling) has become synonymous with virtual 3D models usually generated by designers. Whilst 3D modelling can be a significant cornerstone of the process, BIM at Level 2 is really about the creation of high quality and coordinated information for the construction and management of built assets.

So we prefer to think of BIM as “Better Information Management”.

Associate Director Rob Jackson said, “Bond Bryan Architects is at the cutting edge of digital development in the UK and working with colleagues to achieve this has meant the practice has acted as a live laboratory to test new ways of working. At the same time we have been sharing information and perspectives with other consultants both within the UK and internationally. I’m very pleased we are able to offer advice that draws upon the significant knowledge that we have amassed.”

From April of this year the UK Government requires publicly procured design and construction projects to achieve “BIM Level 2”, compelling the AEC sector to abandon traditional approaches in favour of a digital approach. For many, meeting these targets will be challenging and for others a journey into the unknown.

Those looking to implement BIM can benefit from Bond Bryan Digital’s “Information Management” service, a core requirement of BIM Level 2. This service can help clients understand the benefits of the process, for example by defining the “Employer’s Information Requirements” (EIR) at the very outset of a project. We can then provide the management of documentation and processes to support the efforts of design and construction teams.

Bond Bryan moves up at the AJ120 awards

Marking another very successful year for Bond Bryan, our practice moved up one place to be ranked 46th in the AJ120 awards ceremony at The Tower of London last night.

Published annually since 1995, The Architects’ Journal “AJ100” survey of UK architecture practices ranks companies according to the number of architects employed. This year, to celebrate the AJ’s 120th birthday, the list has been extended to create the “AJ120”.

Managing Director Jonathan Herbert said, “We have continued to grow over the last year and are lucky to have taken on a good number of talented individuals to reinforce an already very strong team; with good growth in architectural practices generally last year, it’s pleasing to see our own progression reflected in the list of the UK’s most significant practices”.

Bond Bryan Contribute to Doncaster HS2 College Success

Two locations are to become the home of the new National High Speed Rail College, the government has announced.  The elite training and research centre will be based in Doncaster and Birmingham; Bond Bryan Architects contributed to the feasibility study supporting Doncaster’s bid.

The college will train the engineers needed to deliver billions of pounds worth of rail contracts over the coming decades, including the new HS2 high-speed rail line.

The successful Centre for Rail Engineering and Technical Expertise (CREATE) bid, coordinated by Doncaster Council, involved a range of private sector businesses and was supported by the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

Ros Jones, mayor of Doncaster, said, “bringing a national engineering college to Doncaster will be a game changer for the town and the Sheffield City Region…”

Architecture Firm of the Year

Bond Bryan Architects were delighted to be awarded “Architects’ Practice of the Year” at last night’s Yorkshire Property Industry Awards. Yorkshire Business Insider recognised the wide range of major high quality projects that have been completed over the last year throughout the region.

On receiving the Award, John Lee, Director, said
“This is a great accolade for us all.  We have a fabulous team of people and they are all thoroughly ‘chuffed’ that their hard work and expertise has been recognised with this award. The region is blessed with some very high calibre practices and to be selected ‘practice of the year’ against very strong competition is doubly gratifying.  The quality of our portfolio is a direct result of the work our teams put in and, above all, the support of our major clients who repeatedly entrust us with challenging and exciting opportunities.  The Insider Awards are a great way of benchmarking performance against our peers, and of course the Awards Dinner is a brilliant night out for catching up with friends and colleagues across the property industry.”

Bond Bryan Architect’s Factory 2050 receives Planning Permission

Our £43 million Factory 2050 project for The University of Sheffield has obtained planning permission.

Factory 2050 will be the UK’s first fully reconfigurable manufacturing research facility, using state of the art equipment/robots and capable of switching rapidly from the production of one high-value component to another to meet the changing needs of aerospace and similar industries.  Leading manufacturers such as Boeing, Airbus, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems and Spirit AeroSystems are committed to supporting this project.

The circular main hall is heavily glazed.  The client team wanted an iconic structure to demonstrate to a global audience how factories should work in the future and to create a centre of advanced manufacturing excellence that would excite a new generation of engineers.

Sheffield City Council understood that our intention was to design a significant, sustainable, high quality building and planning officers have supported the project from the outset.

Director Darren Southgate says:

“The Bond Bryan team has worked tirelessly with the University Estates team, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre team plus colleagues from DLP Planning, Rex Proctor and Partners, Gardiner & Theobald and Curtins to achieve a high quality building that solves the complex manufacturing challenges of today and those envisaged in the future…”

“The architectural project team have played a critical role in producing one of Bond Bryan’s most advanced BIM – Building Information Models to date, to allow the client and the design and construction teams to better understand the project…”

It’s anticipated that the project will be on site by late summer 2014.

Students' Union Building Opens

We were delighted to attend the opening party of the renovated Student Union facilities at the University of Sheffield last night (Thursday 24th).

Guests were guided around the building and treated to a series of portrayals of University life over the last century; this included a re-enactment of the first mixed Student Dances (above). After a performance by singer Mary-Jess Leaverland, a remarkable Sheffield University Student who won a Chinese version of the TV show the X-factor, Paul Bromfield MP formally opened the building.

University House, which was one of the first glass-curtain-walled buildings in the world when it was opened in 1963, has been given a complete makeover inside and out by contractors Balfour Beatty with Bond Bryan acting as architects and interior designers. The project is part of the University’s commitment to offering the very best facilities to students and staff.
