West London Volkswagen Showroom
Winning an international design competition, the building’s presence near the M4 motorway demanded not only architectural excellence, but also a solution that would meet VW’s brief for sustainability and innovation.
Value
Volkswagen’s brief required a showroom that would combine high functionality with a strong brand presence. The compact 0.68-hectare site needed to accommodate showrooms, service areas, parking, and administration within a single footprint. We designed a four-storey structure that maximised visibility from the M4, providing space for 270 parking spaces, 26 servicing bays, and three floors showcasing 90 cars.
The innovative layout ensures a seamless customer experience, while energy-efficient technologies align with Volkswagen’s sustainability targets. Our careful planning and design solutions made the most of the limited space, providing both an attractive and efficient environment that supports Volkswagen’s brand identity.
Impact
The Volkswagen showroom has become a landmark along the A4 and M4 junction, significantly contributing to the local economy. Beyond car sales, it has created jobs and opportunities for engagement with the VW brand. The striking design, including a 230m² living wall, adds an environmentally conscious feature to the local landscape, setting a new benchmark for sustainability.
The showroom’s presence contributes to the area’s revitalisation, offering not only commercial benefits but also encouraging eco-conscious development. The project has established the site as a visible symbol of how thoughtful architecture can blend modernity with environmental stewardship.
Sustainability
The building achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, exceeding energy regulations by 27%. Key features include 300m² of photovoltaic panels that generate a significant portion of the building’s energy and a gas-fired VRF system to optimise heating and cooling. A 230m² living wall, irrigated by on-site rainwater, adds aesthetic and environmental value.
Inside, energy-efficient LED lighting with daylight control ensures minimal energy consumption.
These sustainable design choices align with Volkswagen’s eco-conscious goals, demonstrating how commercial buildings can meet modern environmental standards while offering functionality and comfort.
