Learning built around real life

North Lindsey College’s new teaching building creates a contemporary home for vocational education, apprenticeships, adult learning and specialist SEND provision, bringing diverse learning environments together at the heart of the campus.

Opened to learners in September 2025, the three-storey building accommodates over 1,400 learners and staff, with spaces designed around the practical realities of further education. From specialist training kitchens and science and ICT facilities to dedicated SEND life-skills spaces and a travel suite, the building supports hands-on learning while creating a more connected, inclusive and welcoming college experience.

Value

The redevelopment creates a more connected and efficient campus, bringing a wide range of teaching, support and communal facilities together within a single 7,924m² building.

A simple L-shaped plan is organised around a generous central circulation spine, with clearly zoned curriculum areas making the building intuitive to navigate. Strategically positioned lightwells bring natural light deep into the plan and support cross-ventilation, while the depth of the teaching wings has been carefully considered to maximise daylight, views and natural ventilation.

The experience begins with a clear pedestrian route to a prominent main entrance and triple-height reception. From here, views towards the feature staircase, dining hall, courtyard and boulevard immediately connect visitors with the activity of the College and make orientation simple.

The building has been shaped around the realities of vocational education. Alongside general teaching spaces, it accommodates specialist facilities including science and ICT classrooms, training kitchens, hospitality spaces and dedicated travel and business suites. The travel learning environment includes a fuselage element, helping students learn within spaces that reflect the environments they will encounter beyond college.

Robust, hard-wearing materials were selected to support long-term use and minimise maintenance. Light and blue brickwork, neutral cladding and curtain walling create a distinct new identity while referencing the wider campus and opening key shared spaces towards the landscape.

Impact

The new building supports a diverse learning community, from young people beginning vocational pathways to apprentices and adults returning to education to retrain and develop new skills.

Practical learning is central to the design. Large teaching and production kitchens support the College’s hospitality and catering offer, while specialist learning environments provide students with opportunities to develop skills in settings that more closely reflect the workplace.

Inclusive learning has been considered with the same level of care. SEND facilities are integrated on the ground floor, with their own entrance and drop-off arrangements while retaining a strong connection to the wider College. Dedicated classrooms and breakout spaces sit alongside an independent flat and kitchen, supporting both curriculum learning and practical life skills. Adaptable elements, including rise-and-fall workstations, further respond to individual student needs.

Social spaces are deliberately placed at the centre of college life. The dining hall opens directly onto a landscaped external ‘heart space’, creating opportunities for outdoor dining, collaboration and informal interaction. A feature staircase connects teaching, learning resource and staff spaces above, helping activity remain visible throughout the building.

The dining hall and auditorium are also arranged as a secure out-of-hours zone, allowing performances, open evenings and community activity to take place independently from the rest of the College. This supports North Lindsey College’s wider role as a place for lifelong learning and community use.

The project created learning opportunities during construction too, with construction students able to shadow the delivery process and gain first-hand insight into a live project.

The North Lindsey College project exemplifies modern, sustainable education design, delivering a zero-carbon-ready facility that balances innovation with community needs while enhancing biodiversity and student well-being.
Sustainability

Sustainability shaped the building and landscape strategy from the outset, with the new facilities designed around an ambition to achieve zero carbon in operation.

Passive measures reduce energy demand before active systems are considered. Teaching spaces are designed to maximise natural daylight and ventilation, while lightwells through the central circulation space also act as ventilation chimneys. Large windows provide daylight and views, with integrated opening panels and louvres supporting secure natural ventilation.

Air-source heat pumps and roof-mounted solar panels provide renewable energy, with additional photovoltaic provision incorporated into canopies along the south-facing boulevard. A highly insulated envelope and robust material palette further support efficient operation and reduced whole-life maintenance.

Landscape forms an important part of the environmental strategy. Existing and proposed green infrastructure brings together trees, hedgerows, grassland, woodland and new planting across the campus. Predominantly native and high-biodiversity species, species-rich grassland and wildflower planting strengthen habitats while creating greener spaces for learning, relaxation and social interaction. The proposals target an urban greening factor of at least 0.35.

Careful phasing allowed the College to remain operational throughout construction, maintaining education while the new facilities were delivered. The process also gave students studying construction an opportunity to engage directly with the project, extending its social value beyond the completed building.
