Canon Medical Arena
As the UK’s first carbon-neutral community arena, Canon Medical Arena sets a new benchmark for future developments.
As the UK’s first carbon-neutral community arena with an integrated medical diagnostic centre, this project embodies everything Bond Bryan stands for: innovation, sustainability, and community impact. In collaboration with key stakeholders such as Canon Medical Systems UK, Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, B. Braun Sheffield Sharks, and LivingCare Group, this world-class sports facility also prioritises health and well-being for the local community.
The Canon Medical Arena not only serves as a venue for elite sports but also functions as a health hub, setting a new standard for integrated healthcare and sports infrastructure.
Value
From the outset, our collaboration with Canon Medical Systems focused on creating a multifunctional facility that would bridge the gap between healthcare and sport. The integration of a Medical Diagnostic Centre within the sports arena makes this project unique, providing the local community with access to advanced diagnostic services.
The synergy between sports science and routine healthcare facilitates innovation, translating cutting-edge sports medicine techniques into everyday practice. Our design also ensures flexibility, accommodating everything from professional basketball games to community health initiatives. The building’s striking design balances aesthetics with functionality, creating a space that enables both immediate and future growth in healthcare and community engagement.
“We’ve been playing as a club for 33 years in this city and we never had a home. This is our home – and it is transformational.”
Impact
The Canon Medical Arena goes beyond being a sports venue; it’s a vibrant new hub for Sheffield’s community. As the home of the Sheffield Sharks and Sheffield Hatters, it provides a platform for elite athletes and encourages the next generation of sports talent. The co-location of the Medical Diagnostic Centre within the arena also significantly improves healthcare access for the local population, reducing travel times and providing services in a more accessible and less clinical setting.
This integration between healthcare and sport promotes wellbeing in a more holistic and community-friendly way. The arena boosts Sheffield’s economy, attracting visitors for events and contributing to the city’s growing reputation as a hub for sporting excellence and healthcare innovation.
Sustainability
The building’s design incorporates energy efficient materials and systems, minimising its environmental footprint throughout its lifecycle. Passive solar shading and natural ventilation systems reduce energy consumption, while the use of sustainable, locally sourced materials further contributes to a reduced carbon footprint.
The use of timber soffits introduces natural warmth to the otherwise sleek and modern design. The arena supports the NHS’s carbon net-zero goals by reducing the need for patient travel, bringing healthcare services directly to the community. Through this project, we’ve demonstrated how sustainable design can actively contribute to a more resilient future.
“The arena is having a big positive impact on the basketball community and culture, we are inspiring young girls every day to want to play on this court. This is a place where people want to come and play.”
“With the arena having the latest medical diagnostic equipment, we’re not only able to cater for our elite athletes – but we’re also very proud to house equipment that is accessible to the local community.”
