University of Kent School of Economics
A transformative project that embodies our commitment to innovation, community, and sustainability.
This £14 million facility spans an impressive 46,000 m², offering a modern educational environment nestled within the campus’s unique woodland setting.
The project not only enhances the university’s academic offerings but also strengthens its bond with the natural landscape, creating a space where students can thrive.
Value
When the Willmott Dixon approached us, their vision was to develop a flexible, contemporary teaching facility that could adapt to the evolving needs of higher education. Understanding this necessity, we designed a building that optimally integrates teaching spaces and shared facilities within a cohesive strategic hub on campus. The unique L-shaped layout revolves around a central atrium, serving as a dynamic space for collaboration and interaction among students and staff.
To achieve this vision, we selected materials that resonate with the woodland surroundings while maintaining a modern aesthetic. The darker brick façade serves as a complementary backdrop to the trees, allowing the natural environment to remain the focal point.
We also incorporated metal cladding that glistens in the dappled light, adding a sense of rhythm to the façade. This design approach has resulted in a facility that not only meets the university’s immediate requirements but also anticipates future educational demands, ensuring longevity and relevance.
Impact
The new School of Economics has quickly become a vital part of the University of Kent’s community, enhancing the educational landscape. Set against the backdrop of ancient woodland, the building encourages a deeper connection to nature, promoting a holistic approach to learning. The flexible spaces designed within the atrium provide a venue for academic activities, events, and casual gatherings, making it a central hub for students.
The project has significantly boosted the local economy through job creation during its construction phase and beyond, as it attracts new students and faculty to the university. The integration of shared facilities also promotes collaboration between different departments, encouraging interdisciplinary learning and community engagement.
As students and faculty utilise the various spaces within the building, it has become a catalyst for academic exchange and social interaction, enhancing the overall campus experience.
A vibrant, sustainable learning hub in harmony with its woodland setting, the University of Kent’s School of Economics fosters academic collaboration and a strong connection to nature.
Sustainability
We adopted an innovative hybrid structural approach using lightweight steel and Cross Laminated Timber for the floors and cores, significantly reducing the building’s embodied carbon. This method not only allowed for large spans, enabling expansive teaching spaces and efficient layouts, but also facilitated a swift construction timeline.
Remarkably, the building was made watertight within just six months of commencing work, minimising delays and enhancing cost-effectiveness.
In our commitment to environmental stewardship, we ensured that the building’s materials and design align with best practices for sustainability. The choice of dark brick and metal cladding not only complements the natural surroundings but is also designed for longevity and minimal maintenance. By prioritising low-impact materials and construction methods, we have created a facility that is not only a stunning addition to the campus but also one that reflects the University of Kent’s dedication to sustainability and excellence in education.
As students and faculty walk through the vibrant halls and gather in the lush atrium, we hope they feel the care and thoughtfulness embedded in every aspect of their new home for learning.
