Value
Aimed at enhancing the student experience and supporting local businesses, this vibrant hub integrates teaching, social, and entrepreneurial areas into one cohesive facility.
By blending academic and industry-focused spaces, it serves as a dynamic environment where students, staff, and entrepreneurs can come together, exchange ideas, and drive progress.
This cutting-edge building embodies the university’s commitment to creating an adaptable, sustainable, and impactful space that meets the evolving needs of its community.
Value
The University of Hertfordshire envisioned a multifunctional hub that would integrate teaching, social, and entrepreneurial spaces to support a dynamic academic community. Our design realises this vision by creating a three-storey building, each floor carefully tailored to meet specific needs: vibrant social areas on the ground floor, a business incubator on the first, and MBA and teaching spaces on the third. A central feature staircase connects these levels, promoting movement and interaction.
Flexible furniture arrangements ensure the space adapts to a variety of activities. The business incubator serves as a collaborative environment for students, researchers, and alumni, fostering innovation and supporting entrepreneurship within the university community.
Impact
The hub plays a key role in connecting academia with industry, providing facilities for degree apprenticeships, enterprising graduates, and local entrepreneurs. The ground-floor social spaces encourage interaction among students, staff, and the business community, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
This dynamic environment opens doors for local entrepreneurs to leverage university resources, gain mentorship, and access support services. By nurturing future entrepreneurs, the hub contributes to the growth of the local economy and strengthens the university’s position as a catalyst for innovation, benefiting both the academic community and the wider society.
Sustainability
Sustainability was a key consideration in the design and construction of the hub, aligning with the university’s environmental goals. We utilised sustainable materials and energy-efficient systems throughout the building, reducing energy consumption and operational costs. The adaptable design supports future growth and flexibility, ensuring the hub can evolve with the university’s needs.
By creating a space that balances sustainability with functionality, the hub stands as a long-term asset that supports the university’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint while fostering innovation and entrepreneurship for years to come.
