The Edge Hotel

Sector Heritage & Conservation, Residential
Client Colchester University

The Edge Hotel at Wivenhoe Park is a unique blend of heritage restoration and contemporary hospitality design.

Set within a Grade II listed building and a registered historic landscape, the scheme combines the sensitive refurbishment of a historic house with the addition of a refined new wing. The result is a distinctive four-star hotel and conference facility that celebrates the character of the site while delivering a high-quality, sustainable hospitality experience.

Value

The architectural design brought lasting value by uniting heritage with contemporary functionality, By restoring the historic listed building with sensitivity and replacing an inappropriate 1980s addition with a refined new pavilion, the design re-established the site’s architectural integrity and strengthened its connection to the surrounding landscape. The thoughtful layout enhances operational efficiency for the hotel while providing an inspiring setting.

Through elegant detailing, high-quality materials, and a deep respect for context, the architecture elevates the guest experience, reinforces the institution’s educational ethos, and creates a landmark destination that embodies both tradition and progress.

Impact

The restoration of the hotel has been carefully undertaken to ensure it sits sensitively within its surrounding landscape. Emphasising a harmonious relationship between architecture and environment, the design approach respects the site’s natural features, preserving existing trees and enhancing biodiversity through thoughtful planting schemes. Materials have been selected to reflect the local vernacular, blending seamlessly with the landscape and minimising visual impact.

Subtle interventions and a restrained palette ensure the hotel feels like a natural extension of its setting, celebrating the character of the landscape while creating a welcoming, tranquil retreat for guests.

Sustainability

By carefully restoring the Grade II listed building and removing an insensitive 1980s extension, the design not only preserved the historical character of Wivenhoe Park but also enhanced its relevance for modern use. The new garden pavilion was conceived to sit lightly within the registered landscape, using sustainable materials and passive design strategies to reduce environmental impact.

This thoughtful approach ensures the building’s longevity, reduces waste through adaptive reuse, and creates a highly functional setting that supports the hotel’s purpose.
