The Bishop’s Stortford High School

Client Herfordshire County Council

The Bishop’s Stortford High School is a large secondary school development designed to support a 1,300-pupil intake, with the capacity to expand to 1,650 pupils over time. The scheme brings together teaching, support and sports facilities within a clear and efficient building strategy, creating a coherent campus capable of responding to future growth.

Bond Bryan was appointed at a pivotal moment in the project’s journey. Inheriting a scheme developed by a previous design team, an opportunity arose to bring clarity, confidence and renewed focus to the design, ensuring it fully aligned with the school’s aspirations, regulatory requirements and the practical realities of delivery.

Value

The value of the project lies in the careful work undertaken to review, test and strengthen an inherited scheme. Particular attention was given to the overall building layout, confirming the benefits of the finger block arrangement, with teaching and support spaces organised around a central axis to support clarity, efficiency and ease of movement.

Specialist spaces, including the sports facilities, activity studio and drama hall, were considered separately to allow for an appropriate structural approach and the flexibility to operate independently outside school hours. Where challenges were identified — such as the positioning of teaching accommodation above the main hall — these were explored collaboratively, balancing buildability, compliance and cost while maintaining programme certainty.

Impact

The refined layout supports a calmer, more legible environment for students and staff. Clear organisation around a central axis helps the school function smoothly, supporting intuitive circulation and effective separation between different activities throughout the day.

Teaching and support spaces are arranged to provide consistency and flexibility, while the separation of sports facilities allows them to be used more easily by both the school and the wider community. By addressing layout and coordination issues at a key stage, the project supports the timely delivery of spaces that feel well considered and adaptable, helping to create a positive daily experience as the school continues to grow.

Sustainability

Sustainability has been approached through long-term thinking rather than a single set of technical measures. The building layout supports efficient construction and future adaptability, helping to reduce the need for significant intervention as requirements change over time.

The sloping site required careful consideration of levels and earthworks, with opportunities explored to limit spoil removal and reduce environmental impact. Enhanced planning requirements for fabric and building services also prompted a thoughtful review of energy performance and durability, supporting a school environment designed to perform well over its lifetime.

The Bishop’s Stortford High School project reflects a considered and collaborative approach to progressing a complex scheme. By focusing on how the building works as a whole, and by addressing challenges with care and clarity, the project is being delivered as a flexible, well-structured school environment that will support students, staff and the wider community for years to come.
