Rowan School Expansion: Advancing Special Education and Strengthening Community Engagement

Rowan School, a primary school specialising in supporting children with complex speech, language, and communication needs, recognised the necessity to expand to accommodate increasing demand. In collaboration with Sheffield City Council, Bond Bryan designed an extension that maximises the site’s potential. These new facilities bolster the school’s strong reputation for excellence in education and training, enhancing its ability to provide high-quality learning and development.

Value

This extension offered a lasting solution to the increasing number of students needing SEN provision. Adding four classrooms, calm rooms, and a multi-use hall, providing flexibility in both educational and social areas. The design maximised available space, ensuring high-quality outdoor areas for teaching and play, while the building’s layout ensured smooth integration with the existing school infrastructure, supporting Rowan’s continuing excellence in SEN education.

By maximising the site’s potential, we created flexible classrooms, calming spaces, and outdoor teaching areas, enhancing the school’s reputation as a beacon of excellence and offering a lasting benefit to both pupils and the community.
Impact

The expansion of Rowan SEN School has had a profound impact on the local community, offering better facilities for children within the region, including those with autism. By providing additional training spaces, it also strengthens Rowan’s role as a national training school for educators. This development has enriched local services by improving the support offered to both students and teaching staff, fostering an inclusive, educational environment.

Sustainability

The design thoughtfully incorporated sustainable principles. The layout maximised the site’s potential while maintaining a connection to the natural surroundings, providing outdoor teaching spaces and play areas that encourage environmental learning. Careful consideration was given to materials, energy efficiency, and natural lighting, ensuring the building’s performance and comfort. The use of these sustainable strategies contributes to the school’s long-term success and supports a healthier learning environment, in line with both educational goals and environmental responsibility.
