A Hub for Learning and Community Connection

Rising from a former refuse site, Mercia School has become a state-of-the-art educational facility for 1,200 secondary and sixth form pupils. With a sleek, glazed entrance that welcomes students and visitors, the school seamlessly blends modern architecture with the surrounding neighbourhood.

At its heart lies a landscaped courtyard, offering a peaceful, nature-filled environment for both learning and relaxation. More than just a school, Mercia has transformed into a vibrant community hub that fosters connection, respect, and a shared sense of belonging.

Value

Mercia School provides a modern educational facility that enhances both the learning experience and the community’s engagement with the space. By thoughtfully integrating the school into its surroundings, the design fosters a seamless connection with the local neighbourhood.

The school’s flexible spaces, including family dining areas and sports zones, promote inclusivity and community use, extending its value beyond the student population. The choice of materials, buff brick and timber, respects the local environment and ensures the school remains a lasting and positive presence in the area.

“We are delighted with the school that has been delivered, which surpasses our brief and expectations. The design process was managed well with real sensitivity to the requirements of a successful school in this particular location. The building integrates positively into the community on a difficult site, with the school set for success, being already oversubscribed.”
