Jo Cox More in Common Building at Huddersfield University
A Space for Unity and Wellbeing, UK’s First WELL Platinum Certified Higher Education Building
Value
The University of Huddersfield’s Jo Cox, More in Common Centre, designed by Bond Bryan, has earned the UK’s first-ever WELL Platinum certification for a higher education building. A space where students and staff from all backgrounds can gather, worship, and reflect, the centre is a beacon of wellbeing and inclusivity.
Located on the university’s Queensgate campus, the 950m2 facility integrates people-centred design principles to enhance health, comfort, and community engagement.
Impact
The Faith Centre offers a safe and inclusive space for prayer, reflection, and community engagement, serving people of diverse faiths and backgrounds. With its flexible design, it can host large gatherings like Islamic Friday prayers or be adapted for smaller events, learning sessions, and social activities.
The centre fosters a sense of belonging and unity, promoting positive mental health and wellbeing for students and staff alike. It stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and respect for all beliefs.
“Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, and working together is a success, we did this as one team!””
Sustainability
The Faith Centre is not only a space for spiritual growth but also a model of sustainable design. It integrates numerous environmentally conscious strategies, such as the use of locally sourced materials like Ashlar stone and exposed timber, ensuring a minimal carbon footprint. Daylight simulations optimised natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting and supporting circadian rhythms for healthier sleep.
The building’s air quality was prioritised with low-VOC materials, and an effective ventilation system further enhances occupant comfort. Biophilic design principles, such as natural ventilation, indoor plants, and views of nature, create a calming environment that supports both mental and physical health. These features, combined with thermal zoning, radiant heating, and noise control, were key to achieving the WELL Standard Gold certification initially and ultimately the WELL Platinum certification, recognising the building as an exemplary standard in promoting health and wellbeing.
