Gresham Street Johnson Matthey

Sector Office & Workplace
Client Johnson Matthey
A science-led, sustainability-driven workplace designed to bring people together and reflect Johnson Matthey’s bold, future-focused identity.

Johnson Matthey wanted a space that would be more than just a place to work.

It needed to embody the company’s values of science, sustainability and wellbeing.

The result is a vibrant, human-centered environment where innovation and responsibility sit side by side, expressed through a natural and modern design language that welcomes people in and supports them throughout their day.

Value

The design establishes a strong identity from the moment you enter.

A distinctive aesthetic, rooted in Johnson Matthey’s bold and vibrant brand pallet, is softened with natural materials and modern textural detail to create a space that feels both professional and approachable.

As a destination workspace, the interior offers a clear variety of settings to support modern working patterns

  • Focus rooms provide quiet, uninterrupted space, while open collaboration areas cater to project work and shared problem-solving.
  • Social zones are positioned to encourage natural interaction and create moments of connection across teams.
  • Vibrant blues, bold accents and natural greenery introduce warmth and energy, helping the workplace feel bright, balanced, and uplifting.
Sustainability

Sustainability was an integral part of the refit, enabled through material choices, performance standards and spatial planning.

The building achieved BREEAM Excellent and WiredScore Platinum.

These accreditations ensure the workplace not only looks and feels modern but also operates to high sustainability standards and is responsive to the needs of a modern team.

Sustainable thinking also shaped planning and specification choices. Spaces have been designed to maximise natural light, reduce reliance on artificial lighting and support the health and comfort of the people using the space.

The layout encourages movement and engagement, while planting and greenery help create a balanced, restorative environment.

Together, these measures contribute to a workplace that performs efficiently, enhances well-being and supports Johnson Matthey’s long-term sustainability goals.

Impact

The project goes beyond Part M compliance, incorporating accessibility and neurodiversity strategies, such as controlled lighting levels, intuitive way-finding and a thoughtful mix of textures to support different sensory needs.

Landscape cues and natural references further assist orientation and comfort.

These inclusive measures create genuine social value, ensuring the workplace is equitable, welcoming and supportive for all users.

The final interiors fully embody Johnson Matthey’s identity; a workplace that is vibrant, warm and human-centered, and that reflects the organisation’s commitment to innovation, well being and sustainability.
