Coventry Fire Station balances operational excellence and community engagement in a modern design.

Bond Bryan partnered with West Midlands Fire Service to design a new, modern fire station in the heart of Coventry. The £5 million project, spanning 2,000m², aimed to enhance operational efficiency while creating a welcoming space for the community.

The design process spanned three years, resulting in a facility that serves as both an emergency response hub and a community asset.

Value

The goal was to create a fire station that not only met operational demands but also integrated with the community. The new two-storey structure includes administrative, residential, and service areas, with a striking concrete façade that reflects Coventry’s architectural heritage.

The station houses five appliance bays and provides flexible, functional spaces to optimise efficiency. The design prioritised modern Mechanical and Electrical services, ensuring operational effectiveness, while the industrial chic interior fosters a welcoming atmosphere, balancing the station’s dual purpose of emergency response and community engagement.

Coventry’s facility serves as a resilient emergency hub and local landmark.
Impact

Beyond its role as an operational hub, the new station was designed with the community in mind. It includes public spaces like a gym, promoting health initiatives in partnership with local agencies. The building’s layout enhances response times and community safety, with functional spaces strategically located near the engine house.

During construction, a redundant ambulance station was converted to maintain service continuity, showcasing our commitment to operational resilience. Today, the station serves as a local landmark, fostering community engagement with its open and inviting spaces.

Sustainability

Sustainability was central to the design, with a focus on minimising environmental impact. The building meets BREEAM “Very Good” standards, featuring photovoltaic panels that provide 10% of its energy from renewable sources. Natural ventilation, energy-efficient LED lighting, and external absence detection systems further reduce energy consumption.

Additionally, a kit heating system was included to dry firefighting gear rapidly, improving readiness and reducing operational delays. These measures significantly lower CO₂ emissions, demonstrating a commitment to both environmental and operational sustainability.
