A fabric-first approach informed the building’s form, orientation, and specification, helping to lower energy demand and create comfortable learning environments throughout the year. Passive measures such as natural ventilation, daylight optimisation, and external brise soleil reduce reliance on mechanical systems and improve operational efficiency.

Low-carbon materials were carefully selected to balance durability, performance, and embodied carbon, while energy-efficient building services and renewable technologies, including solar panels and air-source heat pumps, help reduce operational energy use and future running costs. Together, these measures create a resilient, low-carbon school designed to perform efficiently over its lifetime.

A digital-first approach to BIM and data management played a critical role in supporting these sustainability outcomes. By coordinating accurate, structured building information throughout design and construction, the project team was able to create a comprehensive digital twin at handover. This provides the client with a clear, accessible model of the building, supporting efficient maintenance, informed decision-making, and future adaptation.

As schools increasingly move towards net zero targets, this level of digital clarity becomes essential. The digital twin allows building performance, systems, and spaces to be better understood and optimised over time, supporting more effective management of energy use and estate-wide emissions.
