Avanti Grange Secondary School
Avanti Grange Secondary School is a modern, inspiring learning environment designed to support both educational excellence and community life. Created through a highly collaborative and digitally led process, the project brings together thoughtful architecture, strong sustainability credentials, and a clear focus on people.
Working in close collaboration with the client and wider project team, we helped shape a school that responds to its setting, supports diverse learning needs, and delivers long-term value. The completed building provides an inspiring, inclusive environment for students, staff, and the wider community.
Value
The success of Avanti Grange Secondary School was driven as much by the way it was delivered as by the building itself. A highly collaborative approach, established from the outset, created the conditions for clear decision-making, shared ownership, and a smooth journey from design through to completion.
From the earliest stages, the project was shaped around clarity, coordination, and long-term performance. Key design and delivery decisions were carefully tested and refined early, allowing the school’s layout, systems, and construction approach to be aligned from the outset. This early certainty helped protect programme and budget, while ensuring design quality was maintained throughout.
Collaboration was reinforced through a transparent procurement process that brought consultants, contractors, and suppliers into the conversation early. This shared way of working encouraged practical insight, reduced risk, and allowed opportunities for innovation to be explored without compromising cost or quality.
Throughout the project, the client benefited from clear visibility of progress and outcomes, supporting confident decision-making at every stage. Design intent, safety requirements, and operational considerations were consistently carried through from concept to completion, resulting in a smooth handover and a building that performs as intended, both now and into the future.
Impact
Avanti Grange Secondary School was designed to play an active role in its setting, supporting everyday school life while opening up new opportunities for the wider community. Beyond its core educational function, the school provides flexible spaces that can be used for local events, activities, and shared learning, allowing it to operate as a welcoming community resource beyond the school day.
Inside, the building offers an inclusive and supportive environment for students and staff. Adaptable teaching spaces accommodate a range of learning styles, encouraging collaboration, focus, and independence. Generous daylight, natural ventilation, and strong visual connections to outdoor areas create calm, uplifting spaces that support wellbeing and positive daily experiences. Accessibility and inclusion were central to the design, ensuring the school is welcoming and easy to navigate for all users.
Engagement with stakeholders was embedded throughout the project, shaping decisions at key stages and strengthening the school’s relationship with its surroundings. Ongoing dialogue with the client, educators, and local representatives helped inform how spaces are used, how the building connects to its context, and how it can support wider community needs over time. This collaborative approach ensured the school responds not only to its brief, but to the people and place it serves.
Landscape and biodiversity enhancements further enrich the setting, creating attractive outdoor spaces for learning and social interaction while supporting local wildlife. Together, these elements create a school that delivers meaningful, long-term impact — enriching educational outcomes, strengthening community connections, and contributing positively to its wider environment.
Sustainability
Sustainability was embedded into Avanti Grange Secondary School from the outset, shaping design and delivery decisions to reduce environmental impact while supporting long-term performance. A fabric-first approach informed the building’s form, orientation, and specification, helping to lower energy demand and create comfortable learning environments throughout the year. Passive measures such as natural ventilation, daylight optimisation, and external brise soleil reduce reliance on mechanical systems and improve operational efficiency.
Low-carbon materials were carefully selected to balance durability, performance, and embodied carbon, while energy-efficient building services and renewable technologies, including solar panels and air-source heat pumps, help reduce operational energy use and future running costs. Together, these measures create a resilient, low-carbon school designed to perform efficiently over its lifetime.
A digital-first approach to BIM and data management played a critical role in supporting these sustainability outcomes. By coordinating accurate, structured building information throughout design and construction, the project team was able to create a comprehensive digital twin at handover. This provides the client with a clear, accessible model of the building, supporting efficient maintenance, informed decision-making, and future adaptation.
As schools increasingly move towards net zero targets, this level of digital clarity becomes essential. The digital twin allows building performance, systems, and spaces to be better understood and optimised over time, supporting more effective management of energy use and estate-wide emissions. It also future-proofs the school, enabling change and improvement as operational needs evolve.
These combined strategies ensure Avanti Grange delivers lasting environmental value, supporting both immediate sustainability goals and the long-term management of a low-carbon education estate.
Avanti Grange Secondary School is a strong example of how a collaborative, well-managed process can deliver lasting value for education and communities alike. By placing equal emphasis on people, performance, and long-term sustainability, the project has created a flexible, high-quality learning environment that supports wellbeing, responds to its setting, and is built to adapt over time.
Delivered through close collaboration and coordinated decision-making, the school provides a resilient, future-ready asset for the client and a positive presence within its wider community.
