Driven by Legacy

At Bond Bryan, we are guided by a powerful principle: the desire to be good ancestors. As designers, we recognise that our work today shapes the world future generations will inherit. Our goal is to create spaces that leave a positive, lasting impact – places that foster thriving communities, minimise environmental harm, and inspire transformational change.

We ask ourselves fundamental questions on every project to ensure that each project leaves a meaningful legacy: How will this building stand the test of time? How will it support a carbon positive future, embracing regenerative environmental principles? What will it contribute to the communities it serves?

Sustainability as Responsibility

For us, sustainability is more than compliance with targets. It involves crafting designs that enhance lives while respecting the environment. This commitment begins within our practice, where our talented team is encouraged to innovate, collaborate, and consider the broader impact of their work. We view ourselves as stewards of the communities we serve, believing that by embedding sustainability into every phase of our process, we can create projects with a ripple effect that benefits both the present and the future.

One project that exemplifies these values is the Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield. This unique initiative reflects our approach to design as a tool for social, environmental, and community change. Partnering with the Sheffield Sharks Basketball organisation, we worked pro bono for five years to support a vision rooted in legacy.

Evidence of Impact: The Canon Medical Arena Project

The project combined an elite performance venue for professional athletes with a community sports facility designed to reach underrepresented groups in one of the most deprived wards in the UK. The goal was to foster inclusion, increase participation, and promote health and well-being in an area where these resources were critically lacking.

We supported Sheffield Sharks Basketball organisation, because we deeply believed in the legacy the client was looking to create and the impact this would have on the lives of those who needed it most.  Our design blended an elite performance venue for professional athletes, with a community sports facility aimed at reaching under-represented groups within one of the most deprived wards in the UK, encouraging participation, inclusion and access to health and wellbeing provision within an inner city community.

The design went further by integrating a pioneering diagnostic medical center within the sports arena. This innovation provides access to healthcare not only for elite athletes but also for local residents—many of whom face barriers to mainstream healthcare services. The success of this project highlights how thoughtful design can break down barriers, provide equitable access, and promote community well-being.

Our involvement didn’t stop at the building’s completion. We continue to collaborate with Sheffield Sharks on a community outreach program, engaging 600 local students annually through educational workshops. These initiatives encourage young people to explore potential careers in the built environment, nurturing a legacy of empowerment and opportunity

A Legacy of People

As a vibrant, people-focused practice, we are passionate about cultivating a supportive workplace where careers can thrive and new ideas are celebrated. Our people are our greatest asset, and we understand that their passion and expertise drive the impact of our work. Every conversation, drawing, and decision is made with the intention of contributing to a lasting legacy. While we take pride in our achievements, we are also focused on the future—preparing the next generation of architects, clients, and community members to carry our work forward.

One of the things that makes Bond Bryan unique is our sense of the studio as a project which will be handed on to future generations of staff. Our practice is forever a work in progress. We apply the same principles of circular thinking and continuous improvement that make our projects a success to making sure our studio culture and processes are as healthy as they can be. Team members are supported to reach their best potential, with opportunities for development and growth. In the spirit of openness and transparency, information on business performance is shared with team members, fostering a sense of collective responsibility

“I joined Bond Bryan as a graduate in 2006, and over the years, the practice has evolved, but one thing has remained constant: our commitment to fostering growth and developing the potential of every individual on our team. We ensure that our culture and values create an environment where talented, ambitious people can thrive. Our people are our greatest asset, and we’re proud to be shortlisted for the 2024 Building Design Architectural Employer of the Year, a recognition of our ongoing focus on promoting employee well-being and career development.”

Looking Ahead

For us, legacy is not just about creating enduring buildings; it’s about designing with purpose and leaving a positive mark. Whether it’s a school that inspires creativity, a community space that unites people, or a business that team members want to inherit, each Bond Bryan project is part of a larger mission. We are dedicated to making a difference and committed to shaping a future we are proud to pass on to those who will inherit this planet from us.
