Helena Romanes School
Helena Romanes School stands as a dynamic hub that supports lifelong learning and community connection.
Helena Romanes School exemplifies a modern educational environment, blending innovation and inclusivity to serve students from primary to sixth form. Completed in 2021, the £30 million, 13,500m² project was meticulously designed to meet the evolving needs of a diverse student body while fostering connections within the local community.
With a focus on sustainability, and shared spaces for education and recreation, the school offers a versatile and enduring space for lifelong learning.
Value
We designed a versatile, future proof environment seamlessly integrating primary, secondary, and sixth form facilities with shared spaces such as a central heartspace, sports hall, and library. The school supports diverse learning styles through classrooms, dining areas, and advanced ICT facilities. Outdoor sports courts further enrich student and community engagement.
Collaboration with stakeholders ensured the design met the needs of 420 primary pupils, 1,350 secondary students, and 250 sixth formers. Drop-off zones, coach spaces, and parking maximise convenience for families, ensuring smooth daily operations. This thoughtful design reflects a commitment to encouraging interaction, inclusivity, and functionality for both students and the wider community.
As a focal point within the community, Helena Romanes School was designed for the entire community – to participate in activities and events within the school.
Impact
By accommodating students across various stages of their education, Helena Romanes promotes continuity, allowing families to have their children educated within one supportive environment from primary through to sixth form.
The inclusion of multiple outdoor sports courts, including an all-weather pitch, enhances community interaction, offering accessible and inclusive spaces for recreation and sports that residents can enjoy outside school hours.
Sustainability
We integrated a variety of energy-efficient systems, including electric vehicle charging stations and ample bike storage, supporting eco-friendly commuting for students and staff. The building has many energy-efficient design elements, such as high-quality insulation, maximise thermal performance, reducing operational costs and carbon emissions.
We have created a resilient, environmentally responsible building with low operational costs whilst reflecting the school’s long-term commitment to sustainability.
