Creating Space for Growth: Expanding Freemantles School for Specialist Education

The expansion of Freemantles School in Woking has transformed specialist education provision, creating a purpose-built secondary school and further education space for pupils with complex Autism (ASD).

Value

Freemantles School has long been a cornerstone of specialist education, offering tailored support for pupils with Autism and associated learning difficulties. Previously, secondary and further education students were housed in portacabins, limiting the scope of their learning environment. The expansion project has delivered a bespoke, purpose-built facility that not only meets the growing demand for specialist education but also enhances the overall learning experience.

The new building, designed in harmony with the existing school while maintaining a sense of distinction for older students, ensures that every pupil can access a high-quality, structured, and supportive educational setting. This investment enables Freemantles to continue providing outstanding care and education, offering students the space and resources to develop key life skills.

Impact

This expansion has significantly increased capacity, allowing more families to benefit from the expertise and specialist teaching at Freemantles School. With a rise in pupil numbers from 189 to 270, more children and young adults with Autism can now access a dedicated learning environment tailored to their specific needs.

The school plays a crucial role in supporting families, providing them with reassurance that their children are in an environment that nurtures their independence, social understanding, and academic growth. By providing an enhanced educational experience, the project contributes to a more inclusive local community, ensuring that children with additional needs are given the opportunities they deserve.

Freemantles School’s expansion has created an inclusive, purpose-built environment that supports students’ development, maximising their independence and potential within a specialist and nurturing setting.
Sustainability

The expansion project prioritised sustainability, aligning with best practices in environmentally conscious design. The new block incorporates energy-efficient materials and systems to reduce operational carbon emissions, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Thoughtful design elements, such as optimising natural light and ventilation, create an environment that is both comfortable and conducive to learning while minimising energy consumption. The integration of green spaces within the school further enhances student wellbeing, reinforcing the school’s commitment to creating a nurturing and sustainable educational environment.
