The Wool Market
New lease of life for stripped-back, grade II listed market building in the Heart of the Community
The regeneration of Doncaster Wool Market is a fantastic example of how heritage can be preserved while creating a dynamic, modern space for the community.
Value
By retaining the existing structure and implementing thoughtful design interventions, we significantly reduced both the project’s cost and environmental footprint. The total cost per square metre was just £1,422, making the project highly efficient and cost-effective. This approach not only preserved the market’s historical significance but also ensured it could meet modern demands.
The strategic design and revitalisation of this iconic venue ensure it can generate long-term revenue while playing a crucial role in Doncaster’s broader regeneration strategy.
Through careful restoration, the space has been transformed into a dynamic hub, where history meets modern culture, offering locals and visitors a lively space for shopping, dining, and shared experiences.
Impact
Once a neglected space associated with anti-social behaviour, it now offers a welcoming, inclusive environment that fosters community engagement. The market provides a platform for local businesses, supporting job creation and economic growth. The integration of performance spaces and exhibition areas has also turned the Wool Market into a hub for cultural activity, offering local artists and performers the chance to showcase their talents.
This dynamic design encourages foot traffic and increases visitor numbers, making it a key contributor to Doncaster’s social fabric and the ongoing revitalisation of the town centre.
Sustainability
Sustainability was integral to the Wool Market’s regeneration. We retained the existing structure, preserving the iron frame and brick elevations to reduce material waste and minimise environmental impact. A new floor slab improved access and usability. Energy efficiency was enhanced through the installation of glazed facades on two elevations, which maximise natural light and create a seamless connection with the surrounding public realm.
These design features not only reduce energy consumption but improve the building’s adaptability to changing seasons, offering a more sustainable and dynamic user experience while supporting Doncaster’s long-term environmental goals.
