AMRC Training Centre's Dual Honours

His Royal Highness, Prince Andrew The Duke of York has officially opened the Bond Bryan designed £21m AMRC Training Centre in Rotherham, the pioneering centre that is shaping young people and the future of manufacturing in the UK.

Prince Andrew said, “The level of learning and training here is absolutely outstanding and I wish all the apprentices, businesses and sponsors every success. I have been blown away by The AMRC’s contribution to the future.”

Following the opening of the centre, the building received a design commendation at the Sheffield Design Awards, a Biennial event organised by the Civic Trust with support from the RIBA.

Part of the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing, the centre focuses on providing the skills that manufacturing companies need to compete in global markets.

The Regional Growth Fund and European Regional Development Fund supported the centre and 250 students a year, aged from 16 upwards, are being taken on paid apprenticeships with opportunities to progress on to undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Sandwell College Goes Public

His Royal Highness Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex has officially opened Sandwell College’s new ‘Central Sixth’ campus.

The building, which formerly housed The Public arts centre, has been adapted in less than ten months by Bond Bryan working with the college, the local authority and contractors Interserve.  Wherever possible the refurbishment focussed upon minimum intervention retaining the unique character of the original architecture and recognising that many of the existing “people spaces” are excellent environments for young people to work and socialise in.  At the ground floor classroom pods have been inserted into the tall former gallery space.  The centre retains facilities for the community including its original café.

Principal Graham Pennington said, “The transformation of this unique building… into a state-of-the-art sixth form centre has been part of a wonderful year for the college.”

Dig Deep for Tough Mudders

On a drizzly and overcast morning in Skipton, a motley crew of Architects and Technicians put themselves through what’s understood to be the toughest endurance event in the country: the ‘Tough Mudder’.

There was certainly a lot of the stuff (mud) along with many other leg trembling obstacles ranging from ’the Arctic Enema’ which entailed being plunged head first into an ice bath at the start of the course, to crawling through closely confined tunnels neck deep in, yes you guessed it, mud.

Not known for their sympathy, the organisers erected electrically charged swinging cables at the finish.  Despite everything that was thrown at them, the whole team succeeded in finishing the course and so far have managed to raise an impressive £1,435 for our nominated charity, MacMillan.  We extend a big thank you to everyone who sponsored the foolhardy team.

Bond Bryan Wins Best Class at BIM Show Live 2014

It was standing room only for our masterclass at this year’s BIM Show Live delivered by “The COBieNATOR”, our BIM guru, Rob Jackson.  Rob was then delighted to win the prestigious Best Class Prize at the show’s BIMMY Awards, no mean feat given the high quality of presentations.

Rob used Graphisoft ArchiCAD and Solibri Model Checker to give a live demonstration of COBie spreadsheet creation (utilising IFC). For those unfamiliar with COBie, it is the required data format for UK publicly procured BIM projects from 2016 onwards.

The UK’s largest BIM event, now in its fourth year, attracted over 650 delegates and exhibitors to Manchester on 23/24 April.

More detailed information about the presentation is in our BIM Blog

Official opening of Harborne Academy

We were delighted to attend the official opening of our Harborne Academy by HRH The Duke of York on Friday 14th March. The event, hosted by Dame Christine Braddock, celebrated the completion of the new build £12m building, transforming the former Harborne Hill School site.

The Academy, with specialist facilities for medical training alongside a suite of laboratories supporting STEM subjects, offers pathways to progress onto University courses or to gain employment in occupations where there is a significant shortfall of appropriate applicants.

Our design includes a central, top-lit, three-storey atrium providing an impressive arrival space for visitors and a tiered-seating venue for the whole Academy. The retained brick, stone and glass façade of the original school hall, now framing views to the new library, forms a backdrop to the atrium that adds to the sense of drama!

Bond Bryan Speaks at Colleges’ Conference

Bond Bryan Managing Director Jonathan Herbert spoke last week at the Association of Colleges Capital and Estates Conference 2014.

Jonathan’s talk, “Strategic Planning in an Uncertain World” stressed that in a period of uncertainty and limited funds, a strategic approach to college estates management was more, rather than less, important.

He reminded delegates to be mindful of their colleges’ long-term requirements whilst recognising the opportunity that funding via Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) offers.  Crucially he advocated detailed dialogue with LEPs in order to establish a business case for development founded upon economic growth.

Bond Bryan were proud to be sponsors of the Conference.

The David Hockney Building Revealed!

The name of our Bradford College building (under construction) has been revealed: The David Hockney Building.

Earlier this year a competition was launched inviting staff and students to name the new college building, which is set to give a major boost to the regeneration of Bradford.

Signalling his approval, famous college alumni and internationally acclaimed artist, David Hockney said, “I am thrilled that Bradford College has requested to name their new building after me, and of course I am delighted to give my consent.”

English painter, printmaker, photographer and stage designer – one of the best known British artists of the 20th and 21st centuries – Hockney joined Bradford College when it was known as Bradford Regional Art School in 1953, graduating with honours in 1957.

Susan Stones, a member of staff working in the college’s Further Education Registry, came up with the name. Principal Michele Sutton OBE presented the competition winner with an iPad. Speaking on behalf of prize sponsors Bond Bryan Architects, Matthew Hutton said: “It’s really exciting; I’ve designed buildings in the past but never been part of the naming process.”

The eco-friendly campus is sympathetic to the large-scale mill and warehouse buildings that characterise parts of Bradford.
