Student Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology

Our own Sam Trevor has been shortlisted for the prestigious Student Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology awarded by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists. This is the only accolade which recognises outstanding research achievement in Architectural Technology. The winners and Awards will be announced and presented at the 50th Anniversary Celebratory Luncheon to be held at The Savoy Hotel in London on Friday 25 September 2015.

Sam read Architectural Technology at Sheffield Hallam University and recently graduated with a First Class Honours. He has a keen interest in sustainable timber construction and is keen to implement such construction methods as Cross Laminated Timber, particularly UK sourced Brettstapel.

His report ‘Massive Timber Construction’ critically examines the specification, performance and connectivity of the Solid Wood Panel primary structure and building fabric assembly of his final year degree design project – a Passivhaus certified Healthcare scheme.

Good luck to Sam from all Bond Bryan Architects!

Full details of the award can be found here.

A hat-trick for Bond Bryan

Last week proved to be a celebratory week for Bond Bryan when Matt Hutton, Associate Director responsible for the design and delivery of the David Hockney Building, picked up the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Award in the education category.

Only hours later Rob Jackson, Associate Director for Digital Innovation & Integration at Bond Bryan, scooped up two awards at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) BIM4SME Awards in London for Best SME BIM Blog and Best SME BIM Project (Medium Enterprise).

Bond Bryan’s design of the David Hockney Building responded to the client’s call for a landmark building that would encourage and support innovative forms of teaching and learning. To deliver this, and to provide long-term flexibility, a series of dynamic interlocking open floor plates were crafted within a simple exposed concrete frame. The result is a multi-level open plan collaborative heart-space for student-centred learning, with specialist cellular teaching zones at the perimeter. The building was officially opened in September 2014 and has since been a great success with students and staff alike.
At 24,000 square metres and a construction value of £36 million, the project is outstanding value for money.

The project was designed with a pioneering digital approach using a three-dimensional virtual model created with GRAPHISOFT ARCHICAD, which together with the engineers’ design information were then combined into a single model using Autodesk Navisworks. This is an early and highly successful exemplar of the combination of information from different software platforms. Bond Bryan resolved interoperability issues by working closely with the software vendors and main contractor, BAM Construct UK Ltd and as a result were commended under the title of “heroes of interoperability” in the buildingSMART 2014 global awards (SME category). GRAPHISOFT have since made the David Hockney project their “signature building” for the global release of ARCHICAD 19.

Rob Jackson commented: “We’ve always believed passionately that being an SME is not a barrier to BIM. The BIM4SME’s work though is important to promote BIM to SME’s who have still yet to take up the challenge or who need support in the early stages of adoption. It is nice to be recognised at the RICS BIM4SME Awards as an SME who is demonstrating that BIM can bring real reward with the right commitment to the challenge.”

Bond Bryan have recently completed a further building at Bradford College, The Advanced Technology Centre, which will be officially opened in September 2015.

Bond Bryan moves up at the AJ120 awards

Marking another very successful year for Bond Bryan, our practice moved up one place to be ranked 46th in the AJ120 awards ceremony at The Tower of London last night.

Published annually since 1995, The Architects’ Journal “AJ100” survey of UK architecture practices ranks companies according to the number of architects employed. This year, to celebrate the AJ’s 120th birthday, the list has been extended to create the “AJ120”.

Managing Director Jonathan Herbert said, “We have continued to grow over the last year and are lucky to have taken on a good number of talented individuals to reinforce an already very strong team; with good growth in architectural practices generally last year, it’s pleasing to see our own progression reflected in the list of the UK’s most significant practices”.

Bond Bryan Architects shortlisted for the Construction News Awards 2015 in the ‘BIM Initiative of the Year’ category

Bond Bryan Architects have been shortlisted for the Construction News Awards 2015 in the ‘BIM Initiative of the Year’ category.

Our entry, ‘Bradford College and Beyond : OpenBIM R&D’, is about our journey with buildingSMART International’s open file exchange standards including IFC and COBie. This journey began with our Bradford College project with BAM Construction completed in the summer 2014. Our learning continues with other projects that have followed and we are now embedding open data processes for all our new projects.

Rob Jackson (Associate Director | BIM & Digital Solutions) said: “It is fantastic to be recognised as an SME for our commitment to research and implementation of open international solutions. I believe our work will benefit not just us as a practice but the wider national and international community for years to come and it is great this has been recognised by making such a stellar national shortlist.”

The next step is a face-to-face presentation with the judges followed by the awards ceremony which takes place on June 30th 2015 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.

Bond Bryan Innovation wins Global Award

Bond Bryan Architects were recognised as “heroes of interoperability” in the buildingSMART 2014 global awards, Small/Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) Category, which took place in Toronto, Canada this week.

Bond Bryan’s work at Bradford College, where we worked with BAM Construct UK to use openBIM workflows, was recognised by the international jury.

Jan Karlshøj from the buildingSMART jury said “The jury has decided to give the SME Special Mention to two companies.  The jury found it stimulating to see SMEs promoting the use of buildingSMART deliveries. SMEs don’t have the same capacity as large corporations and may, therefore, find it more difficult to promote and implement new technology… The two companies receiving the Special Mention are Bond Bryan Architects from the UK and Juul Frost Architects from Denmark.  Bond Bryan Architects gets this recognition for their efforts at Bradford College—The David Hockney Building.”

Rob Jackson, Associate Director and BIM Manager added, “We worked hard to demonstrate openBIM really works on a live project.  It is fantastic to be recognised internationally for our interoperability work. Our project and BIM teams worked closely with BAM Construct UK using cutting edge processes and technology to deliver a truly great building for our client, Bradford College.”

Architecture Firm of the Year

Bond Bryan Architects were delighted to be awarded “Architects’ Practice of the Year” at last night’s Yorkshire Property Industry Awards. Yorkshire Business Insider recognised the wide range of major high quality projects that have been completed over the last year throughout the region.

On receiving the Award, John Lee, Director, said
“This is a great accolade for us all.  We have a fabulous team of people and they are all thoroughly ‘chuffed’ that their hard work and expertise has been recognised with this award. The region is blessed with some very high calibre practices and to be selected ‘practice of the year’ against very strong competition is doubly gratifying.  The quality of our portfolio is a direct result of the work our teams put in and, above all, the support of our major clients who repeatedly entrust us with challenging and exciting opportunities.  The Insider Awards are a great way of benchmarking performance against our peers, and of course the Awards Dinner is a brilliant night out for catching up with friends and colleagues across the property industry.”
