Havering College’s new CISI Centre expands teaching provision at the Rainham Campus, supporting a modern, industry-aligned curriculum in construction and engineering. Developed alongside the remodelling of the existing Construction Skills Centre, the project brings together a range of previously dispersed courses from outdated facilities at the Ardleigh Green and Quarles campuses.
The result is a consolidated, purpose-built environment offering specialist spaces for Modern Methods of Construction, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Plumbing, Computer Aided Design, and a Virtual Reality Suite, alongside flexible classrooms and new dining and social areas.
Designed to accommodate 732 full-time and 551 part-time students, the CISI Centre is a forward-thinking, sustainable development targeting BREEAM Excellent, with the refurbished Construction Skills Centre aiming for BREEAM Very Good. A minimal, robust material palette was used to meet Secure by Design standards while ensuring low maintenance over the building’s life.
Flexibility was central to the design brief, with spaces created to adapt to evolving curriculum needs and industry demands. Bond Bryan worked closely with the College and its stakeholders throughout, achieving full approval at each RIBA stage. The College particularly valued the building’s detailed design and strong aesthetic, which reflects its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and future-focused education.
